JPB, Reserve Shiraz
Variety: Shiraz, 100% Vintage: 2010 Region: McLaren Vale Sub Region: Blewitt Springs, single vineyard Alcohol: 14.5% Cellaring: Suitable for long term cellaring, 20+ years Closure: Natural Cork
The 2010 JPB Reserve Shiraz is the first release of our new flagship wine. The label is a new release but the concept is anything but new. The name and design come from the original labels used by Giovanni Patritti in the early days of the winery. In those days Dover Gardens (where the winery is situated) was part of the Brighton area and the name Giovanni was Australianised to John, hence the labels and barrels that were shipped from the winery carried the John Patritti Brighton name and JPB logo.
Viticulture The fruit from for the JPB Shiraz is 100% sourced from the Patritti family's own vineyard in the Blewitt Springs Appellation of McLaren Vale. Only the very best sections of the vineyard are hand-picked and earmarked for possible inclusion into the JPB blend.
The land for Patritti's, Blewitt Springs vineyard was first purchased in 1960 and planting began in 1966. The land was purchased from the original soldier settler, Vic Whiting whose original homestead, dairy shed and orchard still exist today.
Winemaking The JPB Shiraz is treated to traditional winemaking techniques with minimal intervention to let the character of the vineyard show through in the finished wine. Following fermentation the wine is racked to 100% new American and French Oak Puncheons for maturation. Only the best barrels are selected for inclusion into the blend.

From the 1920's until the late 60's, the main entrance to Patritti Wines was through a hand-made iron gate. This gate was made by a good friend as a gift to the family.
Patritti's Marion vineyards were lost to urban sprawl in the 1950's and land was purchased in McLaren Vale. The allotment at 3 Elliots Road, Blewitt Springs was chosen for the family's new Shiraz vineyard. Once the scrub had been cleared, the vines were planted in the late 1960's. The Old Gate also made the move to McLaren Vale with its new purpose to separate the remaining scrub from the vineyard protecting the young vines from feral animals. Some forty years later the gate, although no longer swinging like it use to, still remains, showing its age to the dry-grown vines than produce around two tonnes per acre of exceptional quality fruit. The Old Gate grapes are used to produce this full bodied Shiraz, showing strong varietal and regional character. The 2008 Old Gate was hand-harvested on the 7th of March 2008. Following vinification, the wine was matured in 100% new American and French oak puncheons before bottling in January 2009. Although this wine is ready to drink on release it will benefit from cellaring.

Gloria Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre Variety: Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre Vintage: 2008 G.I.: McLaren Vale Alcohol: 14.5% V/V, 8.6 Standard Drinks
With the belief that food and wine go hand in hand, the Patritti family (in the late 1950's) decided to diversify their business to include pasta-making. Machinery was imported from Italy and a new building was constructed next to the existing winery. In 1962, the Pasta Gloria business was born. The pasta was made under careful eye, using only the finest ingredients before being air-dried and ready for sale. Despite the pasta's quality, the business struggled to compete with the mass-produced pastas of the increasingly commercial world. As a result, the business wound down and the building was used to expand the growing wine business.
This wine was produced to honour the pasta factory and to justify the stories that are often told over a glass of wine. Like the pasta, this wine was made in the time-honoured way, starting with hand harvesting from old vine vineyards followed by fermentation and maturation in new oak puncheons. Each finished barrel is hand-selected for its unique qualities and characters to make up the final, premium blend. Best enjoyed with friends or a favourite pasta dish.

Variety: Savagnin, Arneis and Pinot Grigio Vintage: 2010 G.I.: Adelaide Hills Alcohol: 12% V/V, 7.1 Standard Drinks
As these things happen, an excuse to have a few drinks was found and three bottles of white were opened with the purpose of creating a new and interesting white blend. The conversation drifted off (as it usually does) to the good old days (the days before the current winemakers were even born). It was a case of the older generation telling the younger generation of the days when the younger generation (they) got in trouble with the older generation! Anyway, the story was about a bloke named Cristiano Bissaca (known by the locals as Jimmy) who worked and lived at the winery with the founder, Giovanni Patritti. Jimmy and Giovanni hand-made the bricks for the winery and it was in these early days that the second generation were children, running around the winery and getting in the way, as kids do. Jimmy had a way of dealing with the children, especially when they would play pranks on him. He would take off his old, wide-brimmed hat and fling it at them - and from the way the story goes, you didn't want to get hit by Jimmy's hat! At this point in the conversation, the winemakers decided 'Jimmy's Hat' would be a great name for the new white blend - three varieties, a hat trick, Jimmy's Hat. But this is when the story gets interesting - as the winemakers celebrated the decision, the wine glass containing the trial blend slid across the table like it was being pushed- but no one was even touching the table. I know what you're thinking, they'd had one too many, or wine had spilt on the table causing it to slide- either way, it was taken as a sign of Jimmy's approval of the new blend and the legend of Jimmy's Hat was born! The 2010 Jimmy's Hat blend is made from three of the most interesting parcels of fruit from the past vintage, all sourced from the Adelaide Hills. Each or the varieties; Savagnin, Arneis and Pinot Gris are relative newcomers to Australia, just as Jimmy was, back in the early days of Patritti Wines. The combined blend is a wine with depth, character and balance, a fitting tribute.
