Saperavi is a relatively new variety to Australia with only a handful of plantings scattered across the country. It is however, possibly one of the oldest varieties to be cultivated by mankind. Georgia, Saperavi’s native country of origin, is regarded by many as the oldest wine-producing region in the world. Being such an ancient grape variety, and one that has been used for thousands of years for winemaking, you would expect it to have special qualities. Saperavi has many positive attributes but it’s the intensity of the colour that strikes you first. It’s one of the few wine grape varieties in the word to show teinturier characteristics.

Teinturier is a French word that roughly translates to dye or stain, but in the wine world, it means a grape variety that has red flesh and juice as opposed to most other red grapes where only the skins have colour.

The 2008 Patritti Saperavi is an intense and vibrant deep purple-red colour, the nose is impressive with aromas of dark fruits, cherries and plums with a supportive lift of toasty American oak. On the palate, the dark fruit flavours are layered over perfectly integrated tannins. The wine shows great balance and structure but still retains a lovely, rounded softness.

In other parts of the world, Saperavi has shown its ability to age and develop gracefully - in some cases up to 50 years and beyond. The 2008 has all of the attributes of great aging potential and we predict it will drink well for decades to come.

Arneis

G.I.: Adelaide Hills

Variety: 100% Arneis

Alcohol: 12.5% V/V, 7.4 Standard Drinks

Patritti Wines’ founder, Giovanni Patritti, emigrated from the Piedmont region of Northern Italy in 1926. Naturally, when the third generation started looking for new and interesting varieties, they looked to the region of their roots for inspiration. Of particular interest was the white variety Arneis, known for its elegance and intriguing aromas.

At first glance, the ultra-light straw colour gives an instant indication of the wine’s elegance. The nose draws you in with notes of cold tea, peaches and citrus. The palate is long and fresh with structure akin to the Mediterranean white varieties that are renowned for great food-pairing qualities. The Arneis is a perfect accompaniment for antipasto and light summer dishes.

Moscato

Vintage: 2010

G.I.: South Australia

Variety: Canada Muscat and Muscat Blanc à Petits Grans

Alcohol: 6.0% V/V, 3.6 Standard Drinks

moscato4

Moscato is the Italian name for the Muscat family of grape varieties, one of the oldest and largest families of varietals used for winemaking around the globe.

For this particular wine, two of the most beautifully aromatic and perfumed varieties have been used -  Canada Muscat and Muscat Blanc à Petits Grans. Light on fizz and alcohol, this wine is big on flavour and perfume. Aromas of musk, passionfruit and flowers bound from the glass.

The flavours linger through the smooth and lightly sweet palate with just enough fizz to keep it fresh and lively. This wine is light enough to be used as an apéritif or during a meal but is also sweet enough to go with dessert.
